From ASU, Schäper became an agricultural/irrigation engineer for Superior Farming Company of Bakersfield, CA. Superior Farming grew field and specialty crops on 40,000 acres in the Central Valley, the Coachella Valley, and operated a large hydroponics greenhouse operation near Tucson, AZ. His work involved research, design, construction, and operation of drip, sprinkler, and surface irrigation systems. Superior Farming collaborated continually with researchers from UC-Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Utah State University, and University of Arizona, as well as primary equipment manufacturers.
